5.0 out of 5 stars Best seat on the market.,
By Sarah Mc Bride (Concord, MA) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat, Black (Baby Product)
I am thrilled with my Orbit Baby toddler car seat and want to put to rest some of the issues others have brought up. Our family has all the other Obit Baby products and with this final addition to the collection, I see all the usual thoughtfulness of design and attention to detail.

Our son is 14 months old, around 30" tall and 24 lbs and absolutely loves his new seat. We have installed it rear facing in the center seat (on the base) of our CRV. Though the seat is very tall, it allows for plenty of growth in the future and I can still see out the rear window just fine. Also, when installed on the base, our son gets a few extra inches of height and he loves to look out the window.

I also want to point out that the rear installation on the base makes use of the anti-rebound feature of the base which is RARELY found in any car seat on the market in the US, though very common in Europe. The base is braced against the rear seat-back and prevents the seat from tipping forward and smashing your kid into the seat back in the event of a crash. This also protects you child's legs and makes it even safer to keep them rear facing as long as possible. The only other way to get this kind of protection is to use a tether strap and an anchor in the floor of the car, which most cars do not have. Britax is the only other manufacturer to address this in rear facing situations. Kids can sit fine with their legs crossed; lots of safety experts have commented that rear facing as long as possible is the way to go.

There is no point in using the base (or any base) forward facing as it is very important to use the top tether to secure the seat tightly against the car's seat-back. I don't understand why people don't realize this when they purchase ANY seat, yet complain about the lack of forward facing/base coupling with the Orbit.

We do not use this car seat on the stroller chassis on a regular basis but have this wonderful feature specifically in mind for when we are traveling, which we do frequently. Getting through the airport was such a breeze. Just wheel right up to the plane's doors and then carry the seat on the plane and strap it in. I can't imagine trying to travel around a city and forgo using a car seat in taxi just because of the hassle and I'd hate using one of those car seat travel adapters where you push/pull your kid around about 5 inches off the ground, nasty! Almost all cars/taxis these days have the LATCH system so it takes about 30 seconds to get it in and out. This is what Orbit Baby had in mind, you obviously don't use it as your everyday stroller but as an bonus feature to the Obit list of features.

Getting the straps properly adjusted was a cinch, they are on the lowest setting and I have moved the crotch strap forward one. The gray head protection pillow also moved down to the lowest setting and fits our guy perfectly. Again, Orbit Baby has made this process very simple. All of the straps are neatly stored in the back side of the car seat, there is even a place for the sunshade and the manual as well as the extra installation straps for use without the base. I have no issue what so ever with the straps twisting. When I take my son out of the seat, we loosen the straps and then use the handy Velcro tabs to keep the straps out of the way. When I put him back in, the straps are out of the way and just waiting to be secured, piece of cake!
Can't wait for Obit to adjust their line for multi-kid families!

Make Sense Of Car Seat Safety For Your Newborn

Parents go out of their way to choose the right car seat for their baby. They spend significant time and money to protect their most precious cargo. Yet, in 2005, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that, according to a multi-year study, misuse occurred in 79.5 percent of the child safety seats inspected.

The study suggests that many parents unwittingly put their children at risk by failing to use the safety restraints properly. The most common mistakes found were loose harness straps and safety belt attachments. Unfortunately, the NHTSA also calls these misuses "critical" because of the potential for injury.

So how do you know make sense of keeping your newborn safe?

First, make sure you are using the correct seat – in the correct position -- for your baby's age and weight. Most infant seats can be used in the rear-facing position for children under one year of age who have not yet reached 20 pounds.

Infant-only seats are designed for younger, smaller babies, so they are a good choice for your newborn. They offer a good fit and are conveniently small and portable. Infant seats should always be used in the back seat, as should all child safety restraints, and only in the rear-facing position.

If you prefer a seat that will accommodate your baby as she grows, a convertible seat is another option. Convertible seats are larger and heavier, so they can accommodate your baby for a longer period of time. They are used in the rear-facing position for children under one year of age and for children over one year who do not yet weight 20 pounds. When baby turns one and exceeds 20 pounds, you can turn the seat forward-facing. Most convertible seats accommodate children up to 40 pounds.

Whichever seat you choose, it is absolutely essential you know how to use it. Make sure to read the manufacturer's instructions, as well as your vehicle owner's manual. To be effective, your child's seat must be buckled into the seat correctly, and the seat must be correctly buckled into your car.

Harness straps seem to be an area of particular difficulty for parents. For your baby's safety, the harness must be in the correct slot position and fitted snugly to your baby's chest. The straps should be in the slots at or below your baby's shoulders for most infant seats and at or above baby's shoulders for more convertible seats. The harness clip that holds the straps together should be at about armpit level, and the straps should not be twisted. You should always check the owner's manual to confirm appropriate placement.

Safety belt use is a common problem, as well. Be sure the seat belt follows the correct path for the position of the seat and recline the seat at about a 45-degree angle, if possible. A rolled towel under the base helps secure the seat into position. Tighten the seat belt, as needed, to ensure the restraint is secured to your vehicle. If your automobile has a LATCH system, use it according to the specifications of your baby's seat and those of the vehicle owner's manual.

Other important seat considerations include seat age and condition. If your seat wasn't purchased new, check the label. Don't use a seat that is more than five years old or does not come with the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure you have all the parts and know whether it has been in an accident. If so, be safe not sorry – don't take the chance.

Finally, if you are unsure about your safety seat sense – or even if you are, visit a safety seat technician to have your seat checked. Your baby's life may depend on it. To find a technician near you, go online to www.seatcheck.org or call 1-866-SEATCHECK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this car seat.,

Despite what some reviews have said, this does work with the Orbit stroller. It uses the same docking system and works great with the car seat base when rear facing. The docking system allowed me to keep my son rear facing longer because it was so easy to rotate the seat when getting him in and out of the car. I am a huge believer in extended rear facing and love this aspect of the seat. We did end up switching to forward facing because my son is a terrible rider and was crying himself sick. When rear facing I couldn't make sure he wasn't choking and this was creating an unsafe driving condition. Once the seat was switched to forward facing the base is no longer used, instead two side braces are installed on the seat. I have honestly never had a problem with the straps twisting. I always loosen the straps when taking him out and tighten them when putting him into the seat. The cover comes off for cleaning without removing the straps which means that I don't have to remove the seat from the car, this is a life saver. The only issue that I have ever had was a weird issue with cleaning. When my son got sick in the car some of it got into a crevice under the cover and was very difficult to clean. Even with that issue, I am very pleased with this seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great car seat!,

This is a great car seat! It is super comfortable and my toddler loves it. The straps are easy to adjust and the set up is pretty easy.

If you have the base, it's very convenient to be able to swivel the seat towards you to load your kid in and out of the car.

The look is cool and modern and the safety records are impeccable!

5.0 out of 5 stars we love it!,

We don't have the stroller, only two toddler car seats for our twins and we are completely satisfied! They are safe and sturdy, the fabric is very soft, and our boys are comfortable riding in them - they love to look outside enjoying the scenery - it relaxes and puts them to sleep easily - giving us peace of mind driving with two calm babies in the back! In our case the seats are fixed in the car - taking the children out of them each time is not a big deal for us - we would have to keep doing it anyways... We hope Orbit Baby will release a system for multiples soon!

Would buy this over again without question. So much nicer then any other car seat I have put her in in other cars. Expensive, but worth it. The whole orbit system was well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this carseat!,
By Flora "No time to go to the mall" (New Rochelle, NY United States)
I think it speaks for itself that when we took this out of the box and put it on the floor, my daughter climbed into the seat all by herself and refused to get out. The seat is very comfortable and deep, so when she falls asleep in it, she can lean her head on the sides of the seat. Yes, it is heavy, but it's a CAR SEAT, not a stroller. We do not (nor do we intend to) move it in and out of the car. Safety is our first priority and this seat seems to fit the bill! (We travel a lot and still haven't found a toddler car seat that is "easy" to fly with.) I like that our daughter (now 18 months) can still sit rear-facing, although we may have to turn her around soon. (We had an Evenflo for my son, which was fine, but nowhere near the quality of the Orbit.) The details on the Orbit are great, too: the velcro holdbacks for the straps so you don't have to dig them out from under your toddler every time, the removable seat pads/cover that make it easy to clean after snacks get out of hand (we love being able to remove just the soiled pieces instead of having to take off the entire cover), and the straps are easy to adjust (just like the infant car seat). Best of all, the rotation on the base has saved us a lot of back pain. If there are any negatives, it would be that the buckle piece between toddler's legs tends to flop down so she sits on it and we have to pull it out from under her and if I leave the seat turned facing the door (when she's not in the car), the top of it partially blocks my view out the back. We haven't tried using this on the stroller, so I can't speak to that, but as a car seat, it's fantastic! I wish they made an adult-sized one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Butter !,
This review is from: Orbit Baby Toddler Car Seat, Black (Baby Product)
Its a great seat. I wish the rest of toddler line was a good- the toddler stroller, as my father-in-law refers to it once we are ready to go as the babies covered wagon ready to head out on the prairie. However, this car seat is great! I love the swivel action. My son grew out of the infant car seat at 5 months. This seat is great for the car. To be honest there is no way I would even try to take this on a plane, even with the base stroller. But as for getting in and out of the car - its a breeze. Its worth getting even if you aren't getting the rest of the orbit line.
